Bioenergy, recycling of organic waste

Energopark is a specialized company set up to construct, launch and operate a biogas plant for recycling organic waste and producing fertilizer at a city sewage treatment plant in Kursk, the first Russian facility of this type based outside Moscow.

The biogas plant is located in the immediate vicinity to the sewage treatment plant supplying main raw materials for recycling.

The biogas plant was launched in the first quarter of 2021. The facility qualification and connection to electricity mains is now underway.

The plant’s installed capacity is 2.2 MW of electrical energy, which is equivalent to 17.8 million kWh per year. The capacity can be increased to 3.3 MW with little additional investment.

Apart from electrical energy, the biogas plant also produces 1 MW of thermal energy per hour. Moreover, the recycling process results in production of up to 115,000 tonnes of organic fertilizer per year.

Market potential

Bioenergy has developed worldwide over the recent years. This technology is based on the use of biomaterials for energy production. The raw materials for recycling are usually household and industrial waste, animal dung, slaughterhouse waste, dairy waste, etc.
Further development of biogas technology in Russia will help resolve an acute issue related to organic waste recycling and green energy generation.
